Travel Tips and Hints - Sensible Packing Advice

Can You Offer Me Some Advice About Sensible Packing For My Trip?

Most of us probably remember problems that can happen when we try to pack everything that we're sure that we'll need for that special vacation, and the problems that resulted from these attempts.

Thoughtful selection of clothing items allows you to mix and match in many ways to ensure many different combinations from Travel Hints. You'll find that if you roll items of clothing rather than laying them flat in your case, you'll be able to fit a lot more in. Try to fit your rolled up items into all of the spare spaces available in your case. This will however mean that you'll need to press many of these items before wearing them, so consider taking a portable clothes steamer with you on your trip.

Remember Weight Limitations. There are 2 issues -what the airline will allow and what you can comfortably carry. Excess baggage costs can be very high ($15 per kilogram is common). If necessary, wear heavy coats and shoes on the aircraft, rather than in your luggage.

Be aware of the most stringent luggage limitation on your trip - different airlines may have different limits.

Leave space and weight for purchases. We recommend that you don't pack to the limit on space or weight when leaving home if you plan to purchase anything while you're away. When shopping keep in mind the additional space and weight implications of your purchase.

A scarf can make a new outfit. Women should remember to pack a number of scarves into their luggage. This can be added to your basic outfit to provide highlights, and offer the appearance of another outfit. A scarf can also be used as a form of head covering if this is culturally necessary in any of the places you plan to visit.

Remember that you have to carry it. Despite the limitations placed on luggage weight and size by the airline, at some stage most of us will need to move it around ourselves. 4-wheeled (spinner) luggage is often simpler to travel with than other types, but on a carpeted surface, you'll still need to drag it. Don't run the risk of back or sprain damage while away from home -it will be costly and spoil your enjoyment.

Don't forget to pack some sensible walking shoes in your wardrobe. At some stage, you will be traveling by foot, and don't want to damage dress shoes. Your feet may swell after long haul flights, and sensible and comfortable shoes can be really appreciated at this time. These are generally quite light in weight and won't take up too much space.

Remember that you will probably be limited with what you can carry. Therefore don't take too many color schemes with you. You can wear basic colors, and use accessories to add the appearance of different outfits.

Remember the little black dress. This can always be a useful multi-purpose item of clothing - for a cocktail party, opera, ballet, or just to be well dressed for dinner. Such a dress is usually small and light and easy to pack. It can always be dressed up or dressed down - it's your choice.

Lightweight parka or anorak. Wherever possible you should pack one of these to provide protection against inclement weather. It should be waterproof, light and easily rolled into a small volume. It needn't be all that stylish, but should be functional.

If carrying items on board an aircraft, make sure you're aware of limitations for liquids and gels. It's also much better to carry items like shampoos in smaller quantities, rather than large packs - this helps reduce weight. Carry only what you will need for the trip, not your complete collection.

We recommend putting everything into resealable plastic bags so nothing can leak into your clothing in the hold of the aircraft.

Mix the family's clothes. If you're taking more than one piece of hold luggage, consider mixing clothing items for family members into more than one bag. If one bag gets lost or delayed, then no-one in the family will be caught without any spare clothes.
